The co-chair of 2004 Classic, Bonnie will have more time to play this year. Her husband, Ed Merkel, is a great supporter
of her flying. So much so that she has been on the race 14 of their 21 anniversaries. A former director of the Aerodynamic
Laboratories at Wichita State University, she is currrently a high school mathematics instructor and adjunct lecturere at
Wichita State. She volunteers with SWE, AIAA, EAA, and Kansas Chapter 99s. She is always promoting women in aviation. Bonnie
has given performances as Louise Thaden for local civic groups and honored the ARC with a stellar performance at their Take
Off Banquet in Wichita in 2004.
Carol is back for her 13th Classic. With 3000 hours in her logbook, she holds a commercial certificate with SMEL rating;
a CFI; glider private, tail wheel, sea plane and aerobatics endorsements. Carol dabbles in landscape architecture - mostly
in bad weather these days. She uses good days for flight instructing and occasionally flying as co-pilot on a King Air 200.
Her late husband, Bob, was a captain with Northwest Airlines. Carol is thinking about taking a 100-mile bike ride, if she
can fit in with flying her Mooney around the country and her activities as treasurer, compass rose painter, and pancake breakfast
organizer for her Austin 99s chapter.
