Every web site has a links page, it seems, and the The Back Shop is no exception! Some sites put up a thousand links, some only a few. We will
list relatively few, arranged in four groups.
Of the four groups, the first are sites we feel will be
of interest to our customers; the second shows sites we found of interest as we
browsed the Web; the third
discusses an interesting combination of computers and model railroading,
involving the use of ".gifs."
The fourth are
simply a set of diversions in case one needs a break from
all of that train stuff!

By Narrow Gauge to Esquel, Argentina

The little train in the middle of nowhere: "La Trochita"
in Patagonia! For an excellent book on this same subject, click
here.
An interesting "by-way" with the various railroading hobbies involves the use of computers and a graphics file known as a ".gif" which
stands for "Graphics Interchange Format." The technical details can be found elsewhere, but the main point being that with
some careful working of HTML codes, one can have an animated (albeit without true animation) train running across ones' screen.
There are two considerations however, to keep in mind. The motion is imparted by the HTML command "marquee". If
you are viewing this page in Netscape, the Galloping Goose motor car (above) will be stationary, as the command is not recognized by that browser.
Additionally, to introduce scenery elements such as track and crossing gates, involves additional codes named "layering" and "absolute positioning."
These can only be utilized at higher screen resolutions.
We plan to have several trains sets scrolling on these
pages in the near future, so check back. The one gentleman who has helped
us with some of the technical details and the .gifts themselves, is
David Epling. Be sure to check out his website.
