On30 Log Car Kit

Please see updated information at the bottom of the page

We are offering an On30 log car "kit," with a bit of a twist. The car itself is the new Model Die Casting HO scale log car. These cars are offered by MDC in a "TwinPak" arrangement, two cars in the package, and the part number is 3050.

The sills are a one-piece die-casting, with integral coupler pockets (which will accept the McHenry, the Kadee #5 or The Back Shop link 'n pin couplers). The trucks on the car are free-rolling, and the sideframes are Delrin. Measuring these parts in O scale, gives a log car of 17 feet in length, 5x6" sills and trucks with a 3-foot wheelbase and 18-inch wheels.

While such a car would be much too small for large O scale geared locomotives, it is perfect for the Bachmann Porters, Shay and Climax models.

Our kit cars include one-piece bunks, rail, chocks, strapping, chain rings, brake wheels and chain. With the exception of the chain, all parts are investment castings in BRASS! The parts are easily assembled with ACC, and no soldering or machining is required either to the brass parts or to the MDC pieces. Instructions are included.

Our bunks are scale models of the "Russel" style bunks as used by the Michigan-California Lumber Company. The chocks and chains are arranged as per prototype, and will actually work (if so desired). Except for the length of the car, the resulting model is very similar to its M-CL "cousins."

Since the MDC log cars are sold as a pair, we are offering our parts to make up a pair of cars, as well.

Parts for a pair of cars are $34.95 msrp. A "six pack" of parts (to make up six cars) is $95.00 msrp.

The Back Shop link 'n pin couplers are $3.95 for four shanks, four pins and four links. These particular couplers are compatible with the Kadee #5, and if you install them with the Kadee centering plate, the link 'n pin shanks will self-center, as well.

UPDATE, O4 March 2006: As you may be aware, MDC was sold to Athearn, and both are now owned by Horizon Hobbies. It is our understanding all of the MDC kits are presently suspended as far as production. If you want to purchase one of our conversion kits, you should have the MDC kit already in hand to assure availability. If the MDC kits are to be discontinuted, we are giving consideration to doing a complete log car kit, whereby you don't need to purchase a third-party donor kit.
