Horse-Drawn Wagons From McKenzie Iron and Steel Here's some "sneak previews" of what's coming from McKenzie Iron and Steel: horse-drawn wagons. The humans and horses themselves are largely done; the wagons shown are pilot models, albeit using some production items already completed. Above is a contractor's dump wagon. The wagon was loaded with earth, rock or sand, then taken to the dumping site, and the load dropped via a pedal and chains. Some of these wered adapted for use by tractors or trucks, and we will offer the kit either way. Smaller earth-moving jobs were accomplished with a simple dump cart (below). These
were also used in connection with city trash and refuse collection work.
The fruit and vegetable peddler's wagon was once a common sight on the streets of cities
and towns. Here is it in miniature:
Light delivery wagons were ubiquitous, hauling every conceivable commerical
product: ice, mail, pharmacy, bakery, furniture, express, hardware, you name it. The design was
of a fifth-wheel style, allowing the wagon to be backed-up to loading docks, or into very tight spaces
on busy city streets.
Oil, kerosene and gasoline were carried by tankers, which had three compartments.
The fluids were dispensed from valving at the end of the tank. These vehicles also carried
axle grease in a separate box. This sample is lettered for Southern California's well-known Gilmore
Oil Company, with their famous slogan, "Roar With Gilmore."
At the end of the day, it was off to the saloon for some tall cold ones !!
The product came in kegs from the brewery, hauled by a special wagon and horses, and all
decorated in a flamboyant manner to attract attention.
We here at The Back Shop had a small hand in the development of some of the patterns (including the umbrella (!) you see in the photo), so we have some paternalistic pride in the final product. The kits will be multi-media, and depending on a number of variables, may contain white metal, brass castings, etchings, laser-cut wood and resin. Full assembly instructions will be furnished, of course. Contact Bill Roy for tentative dates of availability, costs and for further details. Tell 'em The Back Shop sent you !! UPDATE: The Back Shop is not stocking nor selling these kits, we
are merely hosting the photos and information. Contact Bill Roy by email (above).
